The (Good) Word: Weeks of September 25th-October 20th

Community Work

Last month, I shared the very first installments of this series with you. And it’s been a while – but I’m back with the (good) word on The (Good) Word.

In a nutshell? A brief collection of some good news that’s happening out in the world that makes me smile…a different, more positive, more empathetic perspective on the world we live in, especially as it pertains to women.

Completely unintentional: most of the WANT words from these past few weeks are related to politics in some way. No, it’s not about taking sides or sparking debate on issues – but no matter what party we identify with (if any at all), we can all raise a glass and give a hug to these women making a change for the better.

No matter your political views, I think we can all agree that this moment of candidates supporting one another instead of tearing each other down (especially when handed the chance on a plate) is such a big huge YES. via Time

Maybe I’m overly sentimental, but I listened to Ellen K alongside Rick Dees on KIIS.FM almost every single day in the ’90s. Now, she’s made history as the very first woman to front her own morning drive-time radio show. I get emotional every time I think about it. Ellen, you’re an inspiration to us all! via TimeOut + RyanSeacrest.com

Michelle Obama’s newest platform? Making sure that students can get the info they need when it comes to getting a higher education – and inspiring them to do just that. via Better Make Room

This 24 year-old woman is about to set a new standard for Washington: she’s running for Congress, and if she wins, she’ll be the youngest to ever be elected and serve. via The Washington Post

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is doing a federal investigation of gender discrimination in Hollywood. Maybe we don’t have a solution or change yet, but this is a big step in the right direction. via The Los Angeles Times

Jennifer Lawrence. The Letter. via Lenny Letter

Body Community Work

Earlier this month, I shared the very first installment of The (Good) Word with you – you can read more about why I started it here. In a nutshell? Just some good news that’s happening out in the world that makes me smile, plus maybe a reflection or two on a controversy that’s got people up in arms…a different, more positive, more empathetic perspective.

We’ve got lots of good WANT words from these past couple weeks, from cancer-fighting license plates and body-image cereal campaigns to Menstrual Barbie and periods in space. Enjoy!

The (Good) Word, Weeks Of September 12-24th

Live in California? Your license plate can now help early detection of breast cancer. All funds go to Every Woman Counts, which gives free clinical breast exams and mammograms to California’s underserved women. How rad is that? via PinkPlate.org

Hilary Clinton and the tweet that rocked big pharma’s price gauging. via Time, Twitter

Vanessa Williams finally got her apology from Miss America – and there was kindness all around. via The Cut

Melissa McCarthy is basically single-handedly doing away with the whole plus-sized vs. “non” plus-sized clothing separation with her new line. Because we should all be able to wear whatever styles we want. Just one more reason to love this woman. via Fast Company

Special K is changing its tactics – and its entire tune. Own it – boom! via YouTube

This new doll is teaching little girls about something important – her menstrual cycle. (I see a Call Your Girlfriend episode in the making here…) via HelloGiggles

Viola Davis! Viola Davis! Viola Davis! via The Guardian

What happens when you get your period in space? (Okay, so not news per se, but a fun little read…because what does happen up there?) via NPR
