WANTcast Episode 103: The Power Of Not Knowing with Karen Walrond

WANTcast Episode 103: The Power Of Not Knowing with Karen Walrond

the WANTcast

Karen Walrond is the kind of person you just want to know. You just want to soak in some of her light and magic, because maybe, JUST MAYBE, you can use it to help make your own. As someone who has worked extensively with Dove Real Beauty and Brené Brown, Karen is in the business of helping you shine your unique light, no matter WHAT the world throws at you or tells you you need to be.

Karen is a leadership consultant, attorney, speaker, author and photographer. She is a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator, having been trained in Brené Brown’s work on vulnerability, courage, shame-resilience, and worthiness, including the teachings of Dr. Brown’s bestselling books, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong & Dare to Lead. In addition, Karen has been trained in positive psychology coaching with the Wholebeing Institute, using the science of well-being and research-based assessments and interventions to bring about greater satisfaction, purpose and fulfillment in life. Karen helps clients from all walks of life discover their own their gifts and superpowers, develop their leadership skills, and learn how to use them in a way that allows them both to thrive, and change the world.

Karen‘s bestselling book, The Beauty of Different, is a chronicle of imagery and portraiture combined with written essays and observations on authenticity, courage, and the concept that what makes us different makes us beautiful.  She is also the creator of Chookooloonks.com, an award-winning and inspirational source for living with intention, creativity and adventure.

In this episode we talk about grief and the “phases we go through when bad things happen,” holding space for each other in a way that feels true, the intersection of JOY and ACTIVISM, how Karen uses her practice of Positive Psychology to cultivate resilience within her clients and her self, and how to gracefully “not know.”

When I take a new step, I ask: how can I take all of the people I've been in the past WITH me? - @chookooloonks Click To Tweet

In this episode we talk…

  • Losing everything (yep, her entire house and all her belongings) in Hurricane Harvey and how she got through
  • Having multiple career titles (she was an attorney!) and weaving them all together
  • Fighting against beauty standards and a beauty industry that is highly unrealistic (and predominantly white, thin, and privileged)
  • Adoption as a first choice, not a “backup plan,” and creating a family based on your OWN values

…and so much more.

(Fun fact, Karen and I spoke on a panel together back in 2015 – my very first speaking gig with WANT. I could not have asked for a more loving, empathetic person to sit right next to me. I have been in awe of her work and in love with her spirit ever since!)
